How Montgomery Supports Farm Shops
Farm shops sell on provenance, seasonality and the look of the counter. That is a hard standard to hit every
single week, particularly with the gaps between British harvests, and particularly when a shop also runs a
cafe and a deli off the same back door. Montgomery has supplied London’s premium retailers since 1995.
For farm shops, that means a buying team on the market floor selecting produce line by line, rather than a
pick list assembled in a warehouse. Here is what that support looks like in practice.
We buy the season, then fill the gaps honestly
Seasonality is a farm shop’s biggest commercial advantage, so we lead with it. Our buyers work the market
daily and buy British heroes at their peak, which is what gives your displays the flavour, texture and colour
that customers come back for.
Where the British season closes, we complement harvests with trusted importers rather than letting a core
line go empty. Variety and country of origin are labelled clearly on every box, so your team can merchandise
and price with confidence, and tell customers exactly what they are buying.
Ripeness and sizing are agreed before the order
Most farm shop waste is not caused by poor produce. It is caused by produce arriving at the wrong stage for
the shelf life it needs.
We agree ripeness stages and sizing specs with you up front, then buy to that spec. Avocados land ready for
the weekend rather than a fortnight later. Berries arrive graded for a counter display rather than for a
kitchen. Once the spec is set, replenishment gets faster and your presentation stays consistent.
Packing is built for the shop floor, not the warehouse
Produce is packed crate-to-counter, so it moves from the delivery to the display with the least handling
possible. Case sizes are matched to your actual turnover rather than to a standard pallet, which stops slower
lines sitting in the back and helps cash flow.
If you merchandise to a planogram, we pack to it. If you prefer crate-ready layouts, we pack to those
instead.

One consolidated chilled drop
Farm shops usually have three demands on one back door: retail, café and deli. We consolidate those into a
single chilled delivery, time-banded to the slot your team chooses.
The cold chain stays tight from market to door, which protects shelf life on exactly the lines where it matters
most: leaf, soft fruit and herbs. One drop also means less back-door congestion and one signature at intake
instead of three.

We review the range with you each season
Support does not stop at the delivery. We track sell-through and review the mix by season, tuning the range
so slow lines come out and strong performers get the shelf space they earn. Over a year that shows up in
three places: less waste, faster sell-through and better margin on the fresh category.
